 Counselling takes place when a counsellor has a session and sees a client in a confidential and private setting in order to explore a difficulty the client is facing, distress they may be experiencing or perhaps their unhappiness with life, or possibly a loss of a sense of direction and purpose. By listening patiently and attentively the counsellor can begin to perceive the difficulties from the client’s point of view and can then move on to help them to see things more a little more clearly, usually from a different perspective or angle, which helps to address the problem. Counselling is a way of enabling choice or change or of reducing confusion. It does not involve giving advice or directing a client to take a particular course of action. Counsellors do not judge or exploit their clients in any way.

Counselling can assist a client to identify their own personal resources and capabilities, which are sometimes lost or buried in times of confusion and anxiety. This may enable a client to see their circumstances afresh and with clarity so that they can make the necessary changes in their life that will help them at their particular stage of life. Counsellors will not make decisions for a client or impose their opinions on a client, but will respect their individual needs.
